The picturesque three-story tower and several surrounding buildings were built in the 18th century by the 8th Desi, Druk Rabgay. The golden roof was added by the Shabdrung Jigme Chogyal in the 19th Century. The Tango monastery as well as the Cheri monastery is the only two Buddhist monasteries that offer a Degree and are the highest centers of Buddhist education.
